Hoy en Ball & Stats, entrevistamos a Iurgi Caminos entrenador de Taoyouan Pauian Pilots en Taiwan
Today in Ball & Stats, we interview Iurgi Caminos, coach of Taoyouan Pauian Pilots in Taiwan.
- ¿Quién es Iurgi Caminos?
Es un donostiarra de 44 años que tiene la suerte de poder disfrutar del trabajo que hace y además en los últimos años he podido ejercerlo lejos de mi casa, en diferentes culturas como la japonesa o la taiwanesa, con lo que me siento aún más afortunado de poder aprender de culturas tan diferentes.
- Who is Iurgi Caminos?
I´m a 44-year-old from San Sebastian who is lucky enough to enjoy the work. I do. In recent years I have been able to practice it far from my home, in different cultures such as Japanese or Taiwanese, so I feel even more fortunate to be able to learn from such different cultures.
- ¿Por qué Taiwan y por qué los Taoyouan Pauian Pilots?
Hay que tener en cuenta que no entrenamos donde queremos, sino donde nos quieren. Hace dos los Taichung Suns, también en Taiwan, buscaron entrenador y mi paso por Japón hizo que una persona se fijará en mí. Tras una gran temporada en la que llegamos a la final de T1 League con un equipo con el nadie contaba los Taoyuan Pilots se pusieron en contacto conmigo. Les gustó la forma en la que me vieron trabajar en los Suns y apostaron por mi para su proyecto de la P. League+
- Why Taiwan and why the Taoyouan Pauian Pilots?
We have to be awere that we don’t train where we want, but where they want us. Two years ago the Taichung Suns, also in Taiwan, were looking for a coach and my work in Japan made one person notice me. After a great season in which we reached the T1 League final with a team no one was counting on, the Taoyuan Pilots contacted me. They liked the way they saw me working in the Suns and they bet on me for their P. League+ project.
- ¿Cómo te llega esa oportunidad?
Creo que responsabilidad.
- How does that opportunity come to you?
I think responsibility.
- ¿Cómo trabajáis con los datos en un equipo de elite? ¿Se usa el dato en Taiwan?
Poco a poco los equipos en Taiwan empieza a introducir la figura del analista, los Pilots eran los primeros en tenerlo, en nuestro caso se llama Huan-Wei Ko, un ingeniero apasionado del baloncesto que trabaja de una forma espectacular para mezclar sus conocimientos matemático con el baloncesto. La P.League+ tiene tan solo tres años de vida y tiene almacenados todos esos datos ya que a su vez está creando una compañía para dar servicio no solo a equipos profesionales sino a las Universidades y High Schools del país
- How do you work with data in an elite team? Is data used in Taiwan?
Little by little, teams in Taiwan are beginning to introduce the figure of the analyst. The Pilots were the first team to have one, in our case his name is Huan-Wei Ko, an engineer with a passion for basketball who works in a spectacular way to mix his mathematical knowledge with basketball. The P.League+ is only three years old and has stored all this data since they are also creating a company to provide service not only to professional teams but also to universities and high schools in the country.
- ¿Qué nos puede aportar un análisis simple o un análisis avanzado? ¿Es decir, porque números en el baloncesto?
Los números nos sirven para valorar tendencias de un equipo a usar más o menos algún elemento del juego, para valorar donde son mejores o donde tiene más carencias. Pero la clave de esos números está en su interpretación y el saber llevarlos a la pista, ahí es donde el entrenador tiene que hacer una lectura llevada a la táctica o estrategia.
- What can a simple analysis or an advanced analysis provide us?
The numbers help us to assess the tendencies of a team to use more or less some element of the game, to assess where they are better or where they have more shortcomings. But the key to these numbers is in their interpretation and knowing how to take them to the court. That’s where the coach has to take those numbers and bring them to the tactics or strategy.
- ¿Crees que deberíamos explotar mas el uso de la estadística avanzada y el análisis en el baloncesto?
Cada día se hace más, pero para ello hacen falta recursos y preparación. Como decía antes no se trata solo de tener los números, se trata de saber leerlos, de darles un sentido al juego y poder trasladarlos a la pista.
- Do you think we should exploit more the use of advanced statistics and analysis in basketball?
More and more is being done every day, but this requires resources and preparation. As I said before, it’s not just about having the numbers, it’s about knowing how to read them, to give them a sense on the game and to be able to transfer them to the court.
- ¿Crees que España/Europa está avanzada en este sentido?
Los clubes de élite hace tiempo que lo llevan haciendo, al crecer sus recursos pueden optar por tener entrenadores en su staff que puedan trabajar con ello, además servicios como Synergy o InStat hace tiempo que ya están implementados en más equipos.
- Do you think Spain/Europe is advanced in this sense?
Elite clubs have been doing it for a long time. As their resources grow, they can choose to have coaches on their staff who can work with it, and services like Synergy or InStat have been implemented in more teams for a long time.
- ¿Hay diferencia en equipos que usan este sistema y equipos que no lo usan?
No sabría contestarte a esta pregunta a ciencia cierta porque nunca los equipos tiene plantillas iguales, al final en este juego marca también la calidad del jugador.
- Is there a difference between teams that use this system and teams that don’t?
I wouldn’t know how to answer this question for sure because the teams never have the same templates, in the end in this game, the quality of the player also makes a difference.
- ¿Una empresa como Ball & Stats puede ser útil para los equipos?
Puede serlo para aquellos que tengan entrenadores que sepa hacer lecturas de los datos, no se trata de tener números, por ejemplo, se habla mucho del tiro de tres y su uso, pero como entrenadores debemos de ser capaces de ver como llegar a ese tiro de tres, y a poder ser que sea el de mejor porcentaje dentro de nuestro equipo. El dato como solo dato no sirve.
- Can a company like Ball & Stats be useful for teams?
It can be for those who have coaches who know how to read the data. It is not about having numbers, for example, there is a lot of talk about the three-point shot and its use, but as coaches we must be able to see how to get to that three-point shot, and if possible, make it the best percentage within our team. Data alone is not enough.
- ¿Crees por tanto que en ligas “más amateurs” el implementar la estadística avanzada puede servir para ampliar las diferencias entre unos equipos y otros?
Para ligas amateur honestamente no le veo mucho valor, la clave para saber valorar los datos está en tener un campo grande, es decir, datos de todos los equipos, de todas las temporadas,… y sobre todo tiempo para su lectura. En competiciones amateur creo que la inversión debe de ir en otros sentidos.
- Do you think that in «more amateur» leagues the implementation of advanced statistics can serve to widen the differences between some teams and others?
For amateur leagues, I honestly do not see much value. The key to know how to value the data is to have a large field, ie, data from all teams, all seasons… and especially time for their interpretation. In amateur competitions I think the investment should go in other directions.
- ¿Piensas como pensamos muchos, que en unos años no va a haber ningún equipo que no tenga un analista en sus filas? (Viendo la referencia de la NBA)
Podría ser, las estructuras de los clubes de elite se han ido ampliando, poco a poco también se va introduciendo la figura del Player Development, una figura que personalmente la considero aún más importante porque la mejora del jugadore debe de ser constante.
- Do you think, as many of us think, that in a few years there will be no team that does not have an analyst in its ranks? (Seeing the reference of the NBA).
It could be. The structures of the elite clubs have been expanding, and little by little the figure of Player Development is also being introduced. A figure that I personally consider even more important because the improvement of the player must be constant.
- ¿Por qué crees que los equipos no dan el paso a implementar esta tecnología y por tanto a contratar a un profesional en este campo?
En muchos casos porque quienes toman las decisiones no tienen el conocimiento suficiente para entenderlo y darle un valor, y en otras única y exclusivamente porque la profesionalización de los cuerpos técnicos no es completa y no llega el dinero para invertir en todo.
- Why do you think that teams do not take the step to implement this technology and therefore to hire a professional in this field?
In many cases because those who make the decisions do not have enough knowledge to understand it and give it a value, and in others only and exclusively because the professionalization of the technical bodies is not complete and there is not enough money to invest in everything.
